Snowmobile Safari to Tempelfjorden

Experience the feeling of cruising through valleys, between high mountains and out to the cold coastal landscape by snowmobile. Our destination is the Tempelfjord, where the legendary trapper Hilmar Nøis spent 26 winters. We head east from Longyearbyen over the frozen river delta through the Advent Valley before driving through the valleys of Eskerdalen and Sassendalen. We then drive north to Fredheim, the trapper’s cabin and home of one of Svalbard’s most famous trappers, Hilmar Nøis (1891-1975). Fredheim was different from the other trapper’s cabins. With a cream jar and nightgown placed by the ammunition and tablecloths and pot plants on the table, his wife Helfrid left her feminine touch on the cabin. Consequently, the well-kept home in the middle of the wilderness became known as Villa Fredheim. The mountain Templet towers behind the cabin, almost like a Gothic cathedral.

Lunch with a view

When the sun returns and spring approaches, if we are lucky, we may see seals on the ice. We stop for a well-earned lunch break in a majestic setting, a nature-based lunch experience you will long remember. If it’s possible, we will continue to our lavvu in the Brattlidalen valley, a hidden valley formed by the meltwater that flowed through here over a period of several thousand years.

Snowmobile Safari to the Wild Fjords

You don’t need to travel far from Longyearbyen to achieve unique nature-based experiences. By driving approx. 35 km to Elveneset, you will be rewarded with views of several arms of the fjord and majestic mountains.

Dress for the cold

We always start our snowmobile safaris with a briefing about safety and how to drive a snowmobile and then dress warmly before it’s time to set off. On this safari, you will experience much of Svalbard within a short space of time. We drive from Longyearbyen to Elveneset, a viewpoint at the top of the De Geer valley. While warming up with a warm meal and hot drink, you can enjoy the wonderful views of three fjords – the Sassenfjord, Tempelfjord and Billefjord.

“World’s most beautiful mountain”

Standing on the headland, we are surrounded by wild fjords in the mountain landscape. Across the fjord, we can see the mountain Templet, which local trappers often refer to as the “world’s most beautiful mountain”. The lines and shape of this mountain, which is reminiscent of a colossal temple, tell us about the history of Svalbard’s climate. The fjord arms surrounding us are the routes to areas of important historical significance for Svalbard.

After exploring the terrain at Elveneset we head back to Longyearbyen. The total driving distance is approx. 70 km. This trip offers an excellent introduction to your Svalbard experience.

Northern Lights Evening

North of the Arctic Circle, the phenomenon of the Polar Night arrives with the onset of winter. This is the time of the year when the sun is below the horizon and in Svalbard it’s completely dark around the clock. Join us for a meal in the spirit of Svalbard on this topographic culinary experience.

Barentz’ house

We head out of Longyearbyen and drive about 10 km into the Advent Valley. One of the buildings at the camp, Barentz’ House, oozes authenticity and is perfect for adventure seekers of all ages. The feeling of being outside in the cold and dark Arctic wilderness is something you simply must experience. During this close-up encounter with nature, you will no doubt be pleased to have an armed guide looking after you. Far removed from the artificial light of Longyearbyen, you will have excellent conditions for hunting the Northern Lights and perhaps you will also spot Svalbard reindeer, grouse and foxes at close range.

Barentz’ House is a copy of the cabin that the discoverer of Svalbard, Willem Barentz, overwintered at Novaya Zemlya in 1596. The original cabin was built with timber the crew recovered from their ship after it got stuck in the ice and they were forced to overwinter.

Chase the northern lights

While warming up around the campfire, we will serve aquavit, delicious homemade reindeer soup, kettle coffee brewed on the fire and dessert. Your host will share the secrets about the Northern Lights in an informative presentation and, if the conditions are right, you will experience this celestial phenomenon outside with your own eyes.

During the Polar Night, we can see the Northern Lights here day and night, which is a spectacular and memorable experience. Can you catch a glimpse of The Plough (or Big Dipper) in the starry sky or the Northern Lights fluttering overhead?

Life in Coal Mine 3

Join the local mining company, Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani, on a journey through Svalbard’s rich mining history while experiencing the everyday life of a coal miner in Mine 3.

Longyearbyen mining history

Mine 3 was shut down in 1996 and more than 20 years have now passed since the last coal miners entered the mountain to extract the black gold. What was it like to work in the Svalbard mines? We can now enter the mine and experience the everyday life of a Svalbard miner. We will provide suitable clothing and take you on a cultural history experience deep into the mountain.

You will get picked up at your hotel, just like the miners were picked up in days gone by. On our way to the mine, the driver will mention some of the major local attractions along the way. Mine 3 is situated in the mountainside above Longyearbyen airport. On our way to the mine, we will also pass the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. From the mine entrance, there is a wonderful view of the Adventfjord, where the guide will meet you. On this tour you will hear stories about what life was like for the miners of Longyearbyen and what the community here was like in the old days.

Coal-mine workers

Our working day starts as we enter the building. A lot here is old and untouched. Before entering the mine, we will put on our overalls and collect our helmets and headlamps. You will feel the humid and cold air in the building. Our guide will explain about the mining operations that took place here while you wander around, gather impressions and hear the sounds from the mountain as if it were speaking to you.

We conclude with the highlight of the tour as we walk into the tunnel leading to the mine deep inside the mountain. It’s completely dark here and you will quickly understand the importance of having a fully powered headlamp. The darkness will get to you and it’s all-consuming, but as always there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Level: This tour is suitable for everyone, but wheelchair users are kindly requested to advise us in advance so we can arrange suitable transport.

Electric Snowmobile Safari to Advent Lodge

Join us and explore the Advent Valley on our groundbreaking electric snowmobiles from Lynx! As the sun returns to Svalbard after the winter darkness, we charge up with solar energy before exploring Longyearbyen’s historic surroundings on the way to our heated cabin Advent Lodge.

An electric wilderness adventure

We leave Longyearbyen behind us and head for the Advent Valley. As our electric snowmobiles make minimal sound, all you will hear is the sound of the skis and belt rolling gently across the snow. As there is no engine noise, you can concentrate on the impressions surrounding us in the magnificent snow-covered Svalbard landscape.

Surrounded by history and experiences

A snowmobile safari on electric snowmobiles to Advent Lodge is the perfect experience for those who have not tried snowmobiling before. We move through the flat terrain in the Advent Valley and have brief stops at several historic sites, including Longyearbyen’s old Northern Lights station and the mountain Operafjellet. If you are lucky, we may spot cute and furry Svalbard reindeer in the distance. We do all this while enjoying the silence that only electric snowmobiles can offer.

Warmth at Advent Lodge

On arrival at our heated cabin Advent Lodge, we have a longer break and warm up with a hot drink and biscuits. Before we continue our journey back in the unique Svalbard light. In February, we can enjoy beautiful blue tones, pastel colours or the first rays of sunshine after the dark season. When the daylight returns in March, the sun’s rays illuminate the snow-covered landscape around the cabin as we set off on the last leg of the safari.

Choose the silent route to your next Svalbard adventure with a guided safari on our Lynx electric snowmobiles. You can experience the Arctic silence while contributing to reduced emissions. This is a memorable experience, powered by pure energy.
